Emerging Scholar: Jimmy Wilson

My name is Jimmy Wilson, and I am the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast’s Emerging Scholar in Residence.

I’m here to share commentary on some of my favorite episodes from the show, making connections to research, posting scholarly questions, and highlighting tips or activities shared by our guests.

What can teachers and parents do to support and nurture creativity in their children?

Dana mentions a Spielberg commencement speech where he exhorts graduates to “listen to the whisper” and not the voices they are trained to listen to for the first 25 years of their lives. Rowe encourages parents and teachers to do two things:

  1. Encourage students and children to listen to their intuition.
  2. Look for what students are good at and encourage them!

As for me, being the younger brother of a theater kid shaped my life immeasurably. Though I didn’t like getting my hair curled for the role of the wicked stepmother in our VHS home video productions, I do cherish the creativity and fun we had making something completely new to us as kids. Today, as an educator, I still call my sister for ideas on improv comedy ideas, musical games, and theater exercises that have translated well into my high school English and creative writing classes.
